PackageIt Team Spotlight - Meet Jessica McCoy, serving Kent Area

Meet Jessica McCoy, Sales Executive

When Jessica McCoy talks about her work, she instantly lights up. “My job is really just helping folks,” she says. “I get to see people every day, walk their warehouses and learn about what they’re doing. It’s fun!” A sales executive at PackageIt, Jess personifies the shipping supply company’s emphasis on client-focused service. Traveling to visit customers and check warehouse inventory, she develops ways to improve their internal and external operations.

Unlike many of us, Jessica thrives on pressure and high-stakes environments. “I love to solve problems; I love tasks, and I love fire drills,” admits Jessica, “And that’s what my job consists of most.”

Grounded in Third-Party Logistics (3PL)

Ten years ago, when Jessica joined Seattle’s PackageIt, she seamlessly segued into her new position with the family-owned shipping supply company. Her previous job with coffee distributor and 3PL company, The Green Room, gave her keen insight into cross-industry procurement and distribution challenges. “We also had a kitting and co-pack area, so I’m very familiar with the labor, packaging and time savings involved,” she said.

Jess understands the start-to-finish process of packaging a product and getting it efficiently to market. Her PackageIt customers benefit from that knowledge, along with her finely honed problem-solving skills, as they tackle their niche warehousing and shipping needs.

According to Jessica’s supervisor, sales manager Teresa Kalista, Jess has spent the last 10 years helping customers manage their packaging and facility supplies and develop vendor-managed inventory (VMI) programs. “Jessica has an incredible passion for partnering with companies to solve their packaging challenges and create new business solutions. The pandemic has impacted our customers in a variety of ways, and Jessica brings energy and ideas to help them navigate this challenging time,” says Teresa. “As a skilled member of our sales team, she also inspires colleagues with her creativity and energy.”

Task-Oriented at Home & Work

Jessica’s tenacity extends far beyond work as she returns home to manage her Enumclaw, WA property and balance her family’s busy home life. Prioritizing time with her husband and two young daughters, Jess also tends her garden, raises chickens and ducks, does home improvement projects and performs daily barn chores for the family’s horses and ponies.

Riding has been Jessica’s passion since her youth. “I started babysitting at age 13 to pay for riding lessons, and I got my first ‘real job’ at 16 so I could buy a horse,” she recalls. Her five-acre property has a barn and arena where Jess rides and trains for three-day eventing competitions. These demanding equestrian rivalries include dressage, cross-country and show jumping. Like many sporting events, the competitions are suspended due to COVID-19—but Jess looks forward to participating when the sport resumes.

Undeterred by the Pandemic Economy

Despite challenges inherent in a COVID-19 business climate, Jessica stays positive and says her daily business routine has not changed drastically. “Even with the shutdowns and business delays, there hasn’t been much impact on my days—aside from wearing a mask when I visit businesses,” she says. Each week, Jess calls on established customers and follows up on weekly sales leads.

“I also make spur-of-the-moment stops at retailers, manufacturers and virtually all types of businesses, since everyone can benefit from PackageIt’s diverse product lines.” The company carries much more than shipping and packaging materials, with inventory that includes custom boxes and cartons, personal protective gear and janitorial supplies, food-service products and general warehouse goods.

In a given week, Jessica may connect with retailers, local shops, manufacturing companies, industrial supply companies and a variety of other B2B and B2C operations. Many of PackageIt’s new and returning customers also rely on Jess and her team for pandemic supplies like cleaning products, Seattle PPE (masks, gloves, etc.) and warehouse disinfection stations that keep businesses compliant with state and local COVID-19 guidelines.

“There’s a use for packaging in every company, and we carry virtually everything else our clients need, too,” she reflects. “We’re not just selling padded mailers or boxes. It could be stretch wrap for pallets or Eccorcrate pallet and container systems. We can arrange for custom printing, and we let their concerns guide us to the right packaging solutions.” Once Jess helps customers pinpoint their product needs, she goes to work finding the best prices and delivery times.
