What Type of Boxes Should I Use for Shipping?

What type of shipping box or crate is right for your shipping needs? Keep in mind that shipping services in the U.S. charge based on the size and weight of the box being shipped, they also have size and weight restrictions. You will need to check to make sure your box falls below the maximum specifications, or your package may have to travel with a freight carrier.

Boxes

Shipping boxes come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and configurations. They are solid and completely enclosed and are really the workhorses of the shipping industry.

Boxes can include everything from the standard square or rectangular corrugated cardboard box to specialized and custom-branded boxes. Here is a shortlist of the most popular.

  • Corrugated Cardboard Boxes – All couriers accept cardboard boxes for shipments, which makes them the most popular option. Cardboard boxes are sturdy containers for most products, including fragile items. They can be found in many shapes, including square, telescopic tubes, and even triangular.
  • Custom and Branded Boxes – Delivering a product in a box that reflects your logo and brand identity certainly has its advantages. Customers are likely to remember the unboxing experience if you add a branded touch. You can also have custom boxes made in a specific size to match your product.
  • Specialized Moving Boxes – Specialized moving boxes are designed to accommodate a particular product type. For example, dishware and glasses require slotted inserts inside the box, while flat-screen TVs and mirrors need boxes that fit their unique size requirements.
  • Collapsible Boxes – Collapsible boxes come in handy because they eliminate the need for storage space. You often see this type of box used with laptops and other electronics.
  • Insulated Shipping Boxes – Insulated shipping boxes combine a cardboard box and a Styrofoam or polyurethane inner container. They are perfect for shipping food, such as meal subscription kits, or medical supplies.

Crates

Crates are a cost-effective option for merchandise that requires more protection than a pallet can provide yet doesn't justify the cost of a fully enclosed box. Crates are an excellent option for lighter, less-expensive merchandise that can tolerate shipping and storage with modest protection or for those large bulky items that require extra protection from vibration, shock, and shifting during transport. They're also used to ship items that may need an extra level of security because they're usually harder to open than palletized loads.

Compared to boxes, crates provide modest security at a modest price. The lower-grade lumber used is less expensive, but it may also be harder to warranty.

Crates are often custom-built to fit what's being shipped and can be reusable. They are stackable for optimized shipping and storage space and provide shipment protection and security. They are most commonly wood but can also be made of plastic or metal.
