Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Cruz Foam?

Cruz Foam is a circular materials company offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic foams like EPS and EPE. Cruz Foam is an ASTM D6400 tested compostable foam used for protective packaging and insulation.

  • What is Cruz Foam made of?

Cruz Foam is made from a proprietary blend of ingredients derived from 70%+ upcycled food industry waste.

  • Where is Cruz Foam located?

Cruz Foam HQ is located in Santa Cruz, California. Our commercial manufacturing is located in Greensboro, North Carolina.

  • How many years has Cruz Foam been around?

Cruz Foam was founded in 2017 by John Felts and Marco Rolandi, with a goal of cleaning up the ocean and removing single-use plastic from the supply chain.

  • Is Cruz Foam Compostable?

Standalone Cruz Foam meets the ASTM D6400 standard for compostability. Cruz Foam will biodegrade in up to 100 days under industrial conditions. By diverting food waste from landfill and using it to create a second life material that can be transformed into usable compost - Cruz Foam contributes to a circular economy.

  • Can Cruz Foam be recycled?

Cruz Foam can be recycled in multiple ways. When adhered to large amounts of corrugate, Cruz Foam products can be appropriate for the paper recycling stream. Cruz Foam will wash out leaving only the usable paper fibers to be recycled into further fiber based products.

Additionally, Cruz Foam can be re-granulated into more Cruz Foam, making it an excellent candidate for closed loop and take-back programs.

  • Is Cruz Foam more expensive than traditional foam?

Cruz Foam is cost competitive and offers long-term benefits in terms of sustainability and environmental impact. Additionally, as demand for sustainable materials grows and production scales up, costs are expected to become even more competitive.

  • What industries can benefit from using Cruz Foam?

Cruz Foam is versatile and can benefit a wide range of industries and use cases, including block & brace, cushioning, cold-chain insulation, e-commerce & delivery, food & beverage, wine & spirits, pharmaceuticals & life sciences, and many more. Its sustainable properties make it an attractive choice for companies looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

  • What is the shelf life of Cruz Foam?

There isn’t a published expiration date on Cruz Foam. In our lab testing, we are comfortable with Cruz Foam having a one-year shelf life.

  • Since the foam is made from shellfish, has any research gone into the possible allergic reactions one may have from the packaging?

The proteins that cause an allergy to shellfish are removed during processing, so there have been no adverse reactions to our foam (reference the Chitosan safety document for more information).

  • Is Cruz Foam resistant to moisture or water absorption?

While Cruz Foam won't completely dissolve in water, like other starch-based biofoams on the market do, higher humidity environments can lead to a softer foam (a.k.a lower compressive strength yet higher resilience/rebound).

  • How is Cruz Foam different from traditional foam?

Cruz Foam is made from ingredients designed to degrade overtime, leaving a more responsible impact on the environment. Traditional plastid foams take up to 500 years to completely break down and then only into microplastics.
